    Workshop Description:
    What we really want is how to get our young people to do the right thing when no one is looking. But how do we get there? Integrating what we know about brain science, intrinsic motivation, and positive discipline; you will leave this talk with tools to get out of power struggles, build character, empower your children (and yourself in the process).

    Facilitator Background:

    Jody McVittie, MD received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and did her family medicine residency in California. She worked as a family physician in both California and Washington before shifting to focus on broader community issues that impact all of our health including education, parenting and land use. Currently she consults with school staff, trains parent educators and family medicine residents, teaches parent education classes and provides coaching to teachers, parents and business leaders. She runs her own small consulting and coaching firm, Encouraging Solutions (EncouragingSolutions.net) and is the executive director of the Seattle-based non-profit, Sound Discipline (SoundDiscipline.org). Her dream is to build healthy communities by supporting parents, teachers and students so that they work together in relationships founded on deep mutual respect. Jody is the mother of three young adults who have been some of her best teachers.

    Workshop Description: Through guided imagery and brainstorming, Arlene and Steven will highlight the critical topics relevant to adapting Positive Discipline tools to children with special needs. These topics include:

    • Mistaken Interpretation Of Behavior By Adults
    • Communication Adaptations
    • Nonverbal Communication Enhancements.
    Facilitator Background:

    STEVEN FOSTER is a licensed clinical social worker who has been working with children and families in the Portland area for over thirty years. During that time he has worked in and directed and designed a number of treatment programs, always using a relationship-based approach, for young children and families struggling with emotional, social, and behavioral challenges. For the past sixteen years he has worked as an early childhood specialist at the Clackamas Education Service District outside Portland. There he has helped to create the array of services provided to children ages birth to five, and their families. A Positive Discipline parent educator since 2001. Steven is also a certified Positive Discipline trainer; training others to teach parenting classes. He is also a sought-after speaker on working with children and families with mental health concerns.

    ARLENE RAPHAEL, MS Special Education, is a certified Positive Discipline trainer. For over thirty-five years Arlene has provided services to children on the autism spectrum and to children with other significant special needs. This has included teaching students in classroom and clinic settings, training their instructors in public and private school settings, and educating their families through parent education classes and consultations. She has designed and taught Positive Discipline courses for parents and teachers of children with special needs, including children on the autism spectrum. Arlene serves as an adjunct instructor in Special Education at Portland State University, where she supervises student teachers and assists with the development of course curricula for teacher candidates who serve students with significant disabilities.

    Cancellation/Refund Policy:

    A full refund (minus a $35 processing fee) will be given when the request for a refund is made up to 30 days prior to the first day of a workshop. Refunds are not available for cancellations less than 30 days before a workshop. However, paid registrants can transfer to another workshop within one year at no additional cost. Refunds are not available after a transfer is made or if you do not provide advanced notice that you will not be attending the workshop. For all other items or events, the processing fee will be 10% of the purchase price or a minimum of $5.
